Secret Search Engine Labs is a next generation search engine that aims to provide alternative search results for people tired of the how Google and the other big search engines rank websites.

Secret Search Engine Labs homepage

The search engine started as a hobby project back in 2007 when Finnish software engineer Simon Byholm decided he needed a challenge and it has since grown to become a full featured Internet search engine. The current website went live for testing in the beginning of 2009 and the public beta testing started on January 6, 2010.

The idea behind the search engine is to provide a search platform that:

  • Is open about how pages are ranked
  • Uses innovative algorithms instead of brute force (large index)
  • Provides detailed information on what factors contributed to the rank of a specific web page.
  • Will not let big sites like the Wikipedia or About.com dominate the search results.
