About The Kent State College of Public Health

Kent State’s College of Public Health was established in 2009 to educate and train students to meet the current and projected shortage of public health professionals in Ohio and throughout the nation. It’s one of only two public health schools in Ohio, and it is the only one to offer a Bachelor of Science in Public Health.

Public Health Careers

Wondering what exactly you do with a public health major? Students who pursue a degree in public health can prepare to work for organizations and programs that have a variety of responsibilities and goals such as:

Improving the quality of our nation’s water and air
Removing toxins from the environment
Ensuring that our food supplies are free of contaminants
Educating society about health risks associated with poor lifestyle choices
Developing plans and mobilizing resources to respond to natural disasters and disease epidemics
Developing sustainable, green technologies

Clearly, there are a great variety of public health careers available, and the goal of the Kent State College of Public Health is to prepare students to pursue any of them. Just a few public health positions include: health services administrator, biostatistician, occupational health and safety specialist, laboratory technologist and internal health specialist. There are many others, though, and students who pursue this major can choose to specialize in any of them.

Public Health Degrees at Kent State University

In addition to a Bachelor’s in Public Health, KSU also offers an 18-credit hour certificate in public health as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in many different specialties. Students of all ages and experience levels can find a program to meet their needs.

The goal of KSU’s School of Public Health is to offer a range of “pathways to careers in public health” that meet the varying needs of today’s diverse student population. Whether it’s freshmen just beginning their college experience, current students looking to diversify their academic careers or practicing public health professionals who want to receive advanced training, the College of Public Health can help.

Because it’s built on the Academic Health Department model, our Ohio Public Health School works toward pooling its assets with those from local public health agencies to provide students with a comprehensive educational experience. The goal is to combine academic scholarship with public health practice to help prepare students for real-world opportunities To learn more about the Kent State School of Public Health, visit the website at http://www.kent.edu/publichealth.
